Map of original 1940s trip

As you can see from comparing the maps, the HUSON TRAVEL LETTERS trip was much more comprehensive in covering and writing about the United States.

The original 1940s Travel Letters was done traveling in a Ford sedan containing camping and fishing equipment and passengers journalists Roland and Malva Huson (parents), and two preschoolers -- my brother "Jigger" and me "Gadget". You can just imagine what a challenge it was to be on the road, sleeping in a car modified to serve as both shelter and transportation! The letters themselves were produced on a typewriter and duplicated on a Ditto machine.

In contrast, the 1989-90 HUSON TRAVEL LETTERS adventure was quite luxurious! Our mother and daughter team traveled in a modern Class A motorhome, towing a small car behind. Our "house on wheels" had all the comforts of home -- living/diningroom, kitchen, twin beds, closets, bathroom and a customized desk with file cabinet! We utilized a computer to personalize the first page of each letter and Kinko's services to duplicate the remaining pages.

Malva and Juanita preparing the letters

This picture shows us preparing one issue of HUSON TRAVEL LETTERS for mailing to the subscribers. Malva did the yoeman's duty of hand addressing each envelope since the letters were designed as personal communication with each child or family group. Juanita drew simple illustrations on the original pages prior to duplication.
